Awareness of nutrition in healthcare is exploding as more patients are empowered to better their health with lifestyle changes. More physicians are integrating nutritional methods with treatment, and medical schools are taking notice, incorporating nutritional education before students enter clinical practice.

Many are taking health back to its roots --quite literally-- as clinical research continues to show that nutrition has a vital place within the healthcare system.

The Medical Nutrition Initiative at UNR Med

The University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine is making moves to become one of just a few schools to implement nutrition education throughout its entire four-year curriculum.

The Medical Nutrition Initiative is a movement to incorporate nutritional awareness, education, and practice for future physicians graduating from UNR Med.

The Medical Nutrition Initiative Committee (MNIC) is a collaborative group of passionate healthcare professionals, administrators, educators, and students, with a mission to put the control back into the patient's hands, by putting whole foods back onto their plates!

Several successful lectures and cooking workshops have been held for UNR Med's first-, second-, and third year students, educating them on how to integrate nutrition into conversations with patients and how patients can incorporate nutrition into their lives.

The MNIC is ready for the next step, and we need your help!

At the conference, our committee will present to leading educators from across the United States at the renowned Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine. By collaborating with leaders within the culinary medical field, our students can bring knowledge back to enhance the medical nutrition experience at UNR Med.

This year, Tasha Vazquez will attend the conference to present on UNR Med's curricular successes. We are hoping to raise $1,350 to assist Tasha with hotel and airfare expenses. Please join us in supporting the movement that empowers patients to better their health in the long term by using food as medicine.

Make your gift today to support our MNIC representative Tasha Vazquez at the Health Meets Food Conference at the New Orleans Culinary and Hospitality Institute!
