Pack Provisions

Twenty-two percent of students at the University of Nevada, Reno reported being food insecure in a 2018 study conducted by the ASUN Center for Student Engagement.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture defines food insecurity as lacking consistent access to enough food for an active, healthy life. Twenty-two percent. That’s one in four of our students worried about paying for food and hygiene items. Coupled with other stressors associated with being a University student – like making the grade, fitting in and more – these students are also unsure of where their next meal is coming from.

Pack Provisions — Nevada’s pantry for perishable and non-perishable food items, school supplies, and hygiene items — was created in 1993 Food pantry fridgeto ensure that students experiencing food insecurity had a place on campus they knew they could rely on. The 153 square foot space, located on the third floor of the Joe Crowley Student Union, is equipped with a commercial-grade freezer and refrigerator, shelving, and ample storage.

We need YOUR HELP to ensure our shelves remained stocked throughout the year.

The number of students who visit the pantry has grown exponentially – from 593 visitors during the 2017/18 school year to 1,384 visits in 2018/2019. As of October 1, 2019, we have seen 336 visits for Fall 2019. If the number of visits continues on this trajectory, we will have over 1,500 visitors by May 2020.

Your support will help to guarantee that hunger is not a barrier to our student's success.

Please make Pack Provisions part of your Giving Tuesday and year-end giving plans. Hunger should not be a barrier to our students’ success.

Every gift, no matter the size, will make a difference in our students lives.

According to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada, a $1 donation can fund three meals. That means, with a minimum donation of $10, you can provide a university student experiencing food insecurity with 30 meals. That’s enough to provide them with one meal a day for an entire month.

If you'd like to make a gift via check, please make the check payable to UNR Foundation, include a note that the gift is for Pack Provisions and mail to:
