Thank you for your generous outpouring of concern and monetary gifts for the students in the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Nevada, Reno. Within a couple of weeks of starting this fund, we had more than 700 requests for help, a demonstration of the dire need of many students. More than 300 liberal arts students have now received help through your donations. Rent, groceries, and fuel were common needs across the applications.
Here are just a few of the comments received from students requesting help:
- If awarded, this assistance will impact my life by helping me pay my rent and groceries, which I pay for independently, thus alleviating financial stress that I had to undergo this fall semester. I also cannot afford winter clothes, and I would be able to use this to help cover those costs.
- Financial assistance would greatly impact my life! I need money to pay for rent for my place in Reno. Because of COVID the hours for my job have stopped over winter break and have reduced greatly over the semester. I am not making enough to pay for rent let alone to purchase groceries and pay for gas. I really need help and any assistance would be a blessing! This winter I’ll be making 0 money and I’m still expected to pay rent, please help.
- If awarded, this assistance would provide the financial aid I need to cover some of the medical bills and my academic needs for spring 2021. As a full-time, hardworking student, my priorities have shifted to the health of my family; this assistance would help me focus on caregiving for my household once they return home, without the worries of not having enough finances.
As the spring semester begins, we hope to award more of these micro-grants. The need is still great, and we are grateful for your continued support of our liberal arts students during these challenging times.
