The University of Nevada, Reno Debate Team is one of the oldest and most successful co-curricular programs in the history of the university. Nevada ranked fourth during the first half of the 2019-2020 season in the 68-member National Parliamentary Debate Association, trailing only the University of Pacific, Rice and UC Berkeley! Through the uncertainty of the past year, we have all learned how to adapt. We’ve adapted the way we work, the way we learn, the way we shop and our Nevada Debate Team has adapted the way we debate.
Last March, like most things, our season ended abruptly. The Nevada Debate Team adapted and with a lot of hard work we were able to compete virtually this year through Zoom. Though, due to the reverberating effects of COVID-19 on the economy, several of our students experienced financial hardship. Students and their families experienced job loss or reduced work hours, and because of this we are focusing on raising funds for scholarships. With your generosity, we can assure our debate team has scholarships that will help them with college expenses so they can keep focused on competition.
Senior Nickie Moore, a double major scholar studying history and philosophy, has been a member of the Debate Team since his freshman year. Nickie plans to attend law school after graduation. As a scholarship recipient he offers this perspective,
“With the rising cost of tuition and losing my job due to the pandemic, a scholarship has helped me tremendously. It feels great to be rewarded for all the time I have put into debate. I have sacrificed many weekends for debate, and it has all been worth it!”
In previous years, your support to the Nevada Debate Team has helped cover the expense of travel for competition, but this year your gift, no matter the size, will provide scholarships for team members who are facing financial hardships. With your support our student debaters can focus on what really counts – their education and participation in Debate. This will enable our students to worry less about part-time jobs and instead devote more time to research and developing their skills for competition.
