The Nevada Sagebrush is the independent, student-run newspaper at the University of Nevada, Reno. Ad sales and donations completely fund our operations and wages. However, when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, local and national companies' advertisement budgets were slashed, and our ad revenues are falling below what is required to fund student wages and operation costs of The Nevada Sagebrush.
Nearly a decade ago, the Sagebrush ad sales and subsequent budget neared $200,000. During 2020/21 — this academic year — we managed to cut our budget down to only the bare necessities but still stand $19,000 short of our projected budget (and lowest in recent history) $59,098. Your support will help ensure that 14 student journalists can keep their jobs!
Our financial independence is crucial to us, as it allows us to cover this campus honestly and without censorship, which is why we need your support. Besides providing essential and critical coverage of the university and its community, we provide hands-on training for aspiring journalists. Many of the Nevada Sagebrush alumni have gone on to work at major national and local news outlets. These alumni gained some of their first hands-on experience in the Nevada Sagebrush offices.
By contributing to the Nevada Sagebrush, you're allowing us to keep doing what we do. Your support enables the paper to keep providing coverage of the community and university and keep training journalists for years to come.
We've stuck around for 127 years, and with your support, we’ll be here for another 127+ years.
