The Graduate Student Association (GSA) at the University of Nevada, Reno helps graduate students with everything from professional development to providing need-based services and awards. Sometimes the unforeseen happens, and graduate students are suddenly facing urgent unexpected expenses with nowhere to turn for help. That’s where The Graduate Student Association Emergency fund steps in. Through the Graduate Student Emergency Fund, the GSA is able to provide financial support to graduate students in need and help ensure they can continue their education. Donations to the emergency fund have supplemented graduate student fees to provide emergency scholarships and support graduate students in times of need.
We began utilizing donations to the Graduate Student Emergency Fund in Spring 2021 and provided funding to two students a total of $1750.00, which provided financial support to students with unforeseen sudden hardship. In addition, due to generous donations to the Student Emergency Fund, GSA was able to allocate $21,800.00 of its funding to assist 28 Graduate Students with childcare and emergency-related expenses. Together, the GSA was able to provide over $23,000 in emergency funds and childcare scholarships to deserving graduate students in the last year.
By providing this support, the GSA can continue to help students thrive in a 21st century student environment and provide an outstanding educational experience that enables students to successfully achieve their career goals.
